Hello everybody,

most recently I've been writing grav vehicles for a Traveller game. That got me thinking ...

With the 3E GURPS Traveller rules, including the cross-TL exchange rates from Far Trader, is there any way to make airships economically viable?

* Airships have to compete with fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, and also with imported contragrav flyers. No Red Zone or the like, regular trader visits, any every world has SOME hard currency. * Heavy fixed-wing aircraft can be killed if you assume a low population density and thus little infrastructure away from the starport. No mile-long reinforced concrete runways, no tank farms.
* Helicopters are relatively short-ranged and fuel-hungry.
* But contragrav Air/Rafts and G-Carriers need no runways, and less fuel than an equivalent airship. * The exchange rate between a TL5 or TL6 airship and a TL8 or TL10 contragrav flyer is probably not big enough to give airships a chance.

Or can it be done?

Regards,
Onno
