I think the volume difference between Space 2e and 3e was just a desire to have 
an "even" volume number. 50 cf is cleaner for calculations than 54 or even 55 
cf.

A rechargable E cell could be topped off by a vehicle's powerplant with little 
impairment to the vehicle's operation (especially a starship). Now, this could 
be a problem on a disabled ship with a non-functioning powerplant and no 
emergency power supply.
