This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

GSbAG Talus-class Switcher Engine and Hopper v0.0 (GURPS Traveller TL6)
  Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer

GSbAG uses steam railways on some underdeveloped planets. They can be
maintained using local ressources, a cost-saving measure which can make
the business case for a new mine viable where imported grav technology
would run at a loss. The Talus is used to move individual rail cars or
small trains at marshalling yards and mine sidings.

Switcher Engine

The Talus is an 0-6-0T tank engine with an integral coal bunker in the
rear. Her engineer and stoker ride in the enclosed and heated cab. There
are running boards for railyard workers in the front and the rear. The
locomotive has a vacuum tube radio to talk to the dispatchers, a small
expense which greatly facilitates operations.
The Talus has a triple expansion engine for fuel efficiency. She burns
0.625 tons of coal per hour of routine use. A full load is $150.

Subassemblies: Body +5, six Railway Wheels +3.
Powertrain: 500-kW all-wheel drivetrain; 500-kW triple expansion steam
  engine; 3,600-kWs lead-acid battery.
Fuel: 150 cf coal bunker.
Occ: 1 RCS, 1 RSR. Cargo: 5 cf.

Equipment:
  Body: Whistle; medium-range radio; 1-mile searchlight; 2-man
environmental controls. External: 333 sf top deck; two tow hitches.

Statistics
Size: 36'x11'x12' Payload: 8,000 lbs. Lwt.: 80,000 lbs.
Volume: 3,000 cf Maint.: 71 hours Price: $79,095

HT: 12. HPs: 6,000 Body, 1,200 each Wheel.

Ground Pressure Very High. No Off-Road Speed.

Design Notes
Performance was calculated with 360 tons of towed weight. Body is
2,000 cf. Wheels are 1,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is cheap,
extra-heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Mechanical controls. 653.55 cf of
empty space. Empty weight is 72,000 lbs.

Self-Discharging Hopper

This open car carries 68 cubic meters of ore or coal. It is loaded by
conveyor belts or cranes, and unloaded through hatches in the botton.

Subassemblies: Body +5, four Railway Wheels +3.

Armor F RL B T U
Body: 3/5 3/6 3/5 - 3/8

Equipment:
Body: 2,400-cf bunker. External: Two tow hitches.

Statistics
Size: 48'x11'x10' Payload: 120,000 lbs. Lwt.: 180,450 lbs.
Volume: 4,000 cf Maint.: 112 hours Price: $31,650

HT: 10. HPs: 4,500 Body, 900 each Wheel

gSpeed: * gAccel: * gDecel: * gMR: * gSR: *
Ground Pressure Extremely High. No Off-Road Speed.
* Use towing vehicle's statistics after adding towed weight.

Design Notes
Body is 3,000 cf. Wheels are 1,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is
cheap, heavy. Armor is cheap metal. 106.875 cf of empty space. Empty
weight is 60,450 lbs.
Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition,
third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor
volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller
rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology
of this vehicle.

Next Week: A container train.
