This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

GSbAG Foothill-class Freight Train v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL6)
  Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer

GSbAG uses steam railways on some underdeveloped planets. They can be
maintained using local ressources, a cost-saving measure which can make
the business case for a new mine viable where imported grav technology
would run at a loss. The Foothill-class Engine is usually found towing
flatbed cars with Series 4 (Interstellar) containers, either nine cars
with the cargo of a Free Trader or twenty-two cars with the cargo of a
Subsidized Merchant.

Freight Engine

The Foothill-class is a 2-10-0 steam engine with an attached coal and
water tender. She was built for high traction at low speed. Most of her
weight rests on the ten big driving wheels, with just two small leading
wheels.
The cab has room for one engineer and two stokers, and two jump seats
for other personnel catching a ride. The running boards lead forward to
the headlight and the pilot plow. The engine has an intercom to talk to
the rest of the train, plus air brake and power lines.
The top speed with nine full 4A containers is 50 mph, but 30 mph are
more reasonable. With twenty-two containers, the Foothill can reach 35
mph and travel at 20 mph. The speed with a hundred coal cars is 15 mph.
The steam engine burns 3.125 tons of coal per hour of routine use. A
full load of 37.5 tons is $1,500.

Subassemblies: Body +7, twenty Railway Wheels +3.
Powertrain: 2,480-kW all-wheel drivetrain; 2,500-kW triple expansion
steam engine; two 3,600-kWs lead-acid batteries.

Design Notes
Performance was calculated with 792 tons of towed weight, representing
the rest of a typical Freight Train configuration. Body is 15,000 cf,
articulated. Wheels are 5,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is cheap,
extra-heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Mechanical controls. 6,087.46 cf of
empty space. Empty weight is 320,000 lbs.

Container Car

This is a stake body car for a Series 4A container or a mix of 4B, 4C,
and 4D containers. Alternatively, it can be used with or without stakes
for breakbulk cargo or vehicles.

Subassemblies: Body +6, eight Railway Wheels +3.
Cargo: 4,000 cf.

gSpeed: * gAccel: * gDecel: * gMR: * gSR: *
Ground Pressure Very High. No Off-Road Speed.
* Use towing vehicle's statistics after adding towed weight.

Design Notes
Body is 4,005.25 cf. Wheels are 1,994.75 cf (increased volume).
Structure is cheap, extra-heavy. Body FRLB Armor is open frame, cheap
metal, Body U and Wheels armor is cheap metal. Empty weight is 80,000
lbs.
Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition,
third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor
volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller
rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology
of this vehicle.

Next Week: A hydrogen train.
