The 10 tons startup weight helps a bit, but weight per kW is lower than a (marine) diesel.

Diesel-electric trains use a diesel generator running at a constant speed and electric motors driving the wheels. No need to store the power in batteries in between. It is a major challenge to build mechanical transmissions for a locomotive, so many diesel locomotives are diesel-electric or diesel-hydraulic.
