This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml Onno Meyer, 2015-11-09
Delgado Monarch-class Express Train v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL8) Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer Delgado uses fission power on some worlds with marginal ecosystems and tainted atmospheres. The weight of the reactor increases the traction of the engine, and the nuclear waste can be dumped on some barren moon. The typical Monarch Train has one Express Engine, seven Passenger Cars, and one combined Passenger/Dining Car, with a speed of up to 200 mph under standard conditions. Express Engine This 200-ton engine has two bogies with three axles each, powered by a helium-cooled, pebble-bed reactor. She has mirrored control consoles for forward and reverse operation. Usually there is just one engineer, who moves between the two cabs as required, but the life support is enough for two. The Monarch is capable of autonomous or remote operation, but that is uncommon in passenger service. Subassemblies: Body +6, twelve Railway Wheels +4. Powertrain: 19,200-kW rugged all-wheel drivetrain; 20,000-kW rugged fission reactor; 18,000-kWs advanced battery. Occ: 2 bridge RCS. Cargo: 80 cf. External: Two tow hitches. Statistics Size: 120'x11'x16' Payload: 2,000 lbs. Lwt.: 400,000 lbs. Volume: 20,000 cf Maint.: 19 man-hours Price: $15,275,240 HT: 12. Design Notes Performance was calculated with 400 tons of towed weight. Body is 10,000 cf, articulated, with heavy compartmentalization and good streamlining. Wheels are 10,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is cheap, extra-heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Sealed. Computerized controls with duplicate maneuver controls. 19.06 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 398,000 lbs. Passenger Car The Passenger Car has six compartments with six seats each. A separate section holds the life support system and an isotope battery. This makes the train independent of the environmental plants in small, scattered stations. Subassemblies: Body +6, eight Railway Wheels +3. Powertrain: 360-kW RTG; 100,000-kWs advanced battery. Design Notes Body is 8,000 cf, articulated, with good streamlining. Wheels are 2,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is cheap, heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Sealed. 1,026.4 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 80,000 lbs. Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition, third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology of the vehicles. Next Week: A recon mech. _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
