This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

Delgado Bee-class Freight Train v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL8)
  Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer

Delgado uses fission power on some worlds with marginal ecosystems and
tainted atmospheres. The weight of the reactor increases the traction of
the engine, and the nuclear waste can be dumped on some barren moon. The
Bee is used for fast freight trains with a dozen cars at up to 150 kph.

Freight Engine

The Bee-class Engine has two bogies with two axles each. The electric
motors are powered by a lead-cooled fast reactor. There is only one cab,
but the drive-by-wire system makes it possible to mount sensors on the
last car of the train for reverse operations. The Bee has a workstation
for the engineer and a jump seat for a conductor.

Subassemblies: Body +6, eight Railway Wheels +4.
Powertrain: 4,500-kW rugged all-wheel drivetrain; 4,750-kW rugged
  fission reactor; 48,000-kWs advanced battery.
Occ: 1 bridge RCS, 1 folding CS. Cargo: 80 cf.

Armor F RL B T U
Body: 4/48 4/48 4/48 4/48 4/48
Wheels: 4/48 4/48 4/48 4/48 4/48

Equipment:
Body: Whistle; two medium-range radios; 5-mile searchlight; 5-mile
low-res imaging radar; two C3 minicomputers; terminal; full fire
suppression system; two 1-man airlocks; 2-man full life system.
External: Two tow hitches.

Statistics
Size: 60'x11'x15' Payload: 2,000 lbs. Lwt.: 200,000 lbs.
Volume: 8,000 cf Maint.: 11 man-hours Price: $4,968,840

HT: 12. HPs: 12,000 Body, 3,000 each Wheel.

gSpeed: 100 gAccel: 3 gDecel: 10 gMR: 0.25 gSR: 6
Ground Pressure High. No Off-Road Speed.

Design Notes
Performance was calculated with 480 tons of towed weight. Body is
4,000 cf, articulated, with heavy compartmentalization and good
streamlining. Wheels are 4,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is
cheap, extra-heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Sealed. Computerized controls.
717.9 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 198,000 lbs.

Mail Car

The Mail Car has a small post office, a mail safe, and a general cargo
section. The computer terminals and the satcom unit in the office can be
used to download Xboat messages. The safe could hold anything from the
payroll of an entire mine town to irrelevant government statistics.

Subassemblies: Body +6, eight Railway Wheels +3.
Powertrain: 125-kW RTG; 100,000-kWs advanced battery.
Cargo: 1,300 cf.

Armor F RL B T U

Equipment:
Body: Long-range lasercom; C3 minicomputer; three terminals; compact
fire suppression system; 10-man conference room; two 5-man airlocks;
high-security alarm; normal toilet; 10-man full life system. External:
Two tow hitches.

Statistics
Size: 90'x11'x12' Payload: 28,000 lbs. Lwt.: 100,000 lbs.
Volume: 10,000 cf Maint.: 28 hours Price: $521,700

HT: 12. HPs: 7,500 Body, 750 each Wheel

gSpeed: * gAccel: * gDecel: * gMR: * gSR: *
Ground Pressure High. No Off-Road Speed.
* Use towing vehicle's statistics after adding towed weight.

Design Notes
Body is 8,000 cf, articulated, with good streamlining. Wheels are
2,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is cheap, heavy. Body and Wheel
armor is cheap metal, cargo component armor is expensive metal. Sealed.
2,864.8 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 72,000 lbs.
Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition,
third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor
volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller
rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology
of the vehicles.

Next Week: A passenger train.
