Jim, I'm writing off the list. I am guessing that she is wondering if they are going to address the volume issue with NLS books. She probably is really meaning to ask if they are going to change the volume but that's a guess. Apparently the Stream either compresses or does some normalizing of NLS books to keep them more equal to the volume setting of the synthesizer. On the BookSense, there can be quite a variation in volume between books. The only thing I can figure is that NLS didn't do much normalizing which seems sloppy to me.
Regarding the distortion, my BookSense distorts when recording through its own microphone very easily and at all sensitivities. It isn't bad for unamplified speech, but at least mine would definitely distort if I were recording a choir practice. It does nicely with an external microphone, though. I am a little concered, though, because I don't think the recordings that are made that are distorted are hitting the digital maximum. Therefore, I'm afraid that the internal microphone might be overloading an analog circuit. Of course I don't know if at which points they have software control over levels, maybe they can fix it. If you don't get distortion, however, this could be varying from unit to unit which is makes the problem more complicated. I hope everything is going all right for you there.
