I haven't used Goldwave, so can't comment.  I hadn't used Audacity for
several years and, on reading Chad's comments, checked it out again.
It's now much more accessible and, yes, free.  For something less
complicated and not costing very much, there's Total Recorder or even
Transcription Buddy from High Criteria (www.highcriteria.com).
