I spoke with the developer of Text Monkey Pro, who said that the sound
heard is only a wave file, so neither he nor I can imagine how that
could be causing a problem.
He further explained that the program stays resident by default,
monitoring the clipboard. Apparently, retaining focus is very important
in using the program to its fullest.
Also, there are a number of graphics and checkboxes which can be
activated or de-activated.
There is an option for disabling the Text Monkey chatter, which I will
be able to use as soon as I can focus on it.
Time to learn more about W/E than I have needed in the past. <smile>
The url for the Boxer software site is <http://boxersoftware.com>, if
anyone wants to check out the program. I have appreciated its cleanup
of e-mail, and I believe that I should be able to use it effectively now
that I have bought it and established a contact with the developer. I
needed more time to become more comfortable with it, and now I have
that.
Interestingly, he tells me he has worked quite extensively with Jeff
Bishop on his text editor, but had not considered screen reader access
in the e-mail program. I plan to contact Jeff himself to discuss the
program with him.
Many thanks, and I will be interested to see what other ideas people
might have regarding the high voice pitch, and of course any experiences
with Text Monkey itself.

Robert and Raul,
Holding the shift keys together and releasing them simultaneously
doesn't appeared to have made any difference in the speech, but at least
the caps keys are behaving properly now. I remember I did deal with the
sticky keys issue when the problem first started. Sorry I forgot that,
or I might not even have mentioned that issue. It's the tone that isn't
changing. The pitch gets deeper or shriller, for lack of a better
description.
After thinking it over more thoroughly, I remembered I had just
re-installed an eval copy of Text Monkey Pro. It was expired, but I
wanted to get ordering info. It may have been shortly after that and
the shriek of the little animated monkey that goes with the program that
I began to notice problems. Before the program expired I was still
running W/e 6.0.
I have since ordered the program, but can't find any support docs. I'm
thinking perhaps this little monkey which chatters as soon as I launch
the program may be causing the problem. It's in the system tray by
default. I don't need it there, but can't find the preferences to
change it.
Does anyone use this program? If yes, how can I get it out of the
system tray and keep it from starting automatically? I may end up
calling the company for this info, but if anyone thinks I'm on the right
track I'd like to know what you suggest next.
I'm using W/E 6.1 with a Realtek on board sound card on my laptop.
Ouch! I just remember why I prefer hardware synths! <sigh>

Press the 2 shift keys together and release them and see if that fixes
it.

Sounds like you have sticky shift keys enabled. When they are enabled,
holding down the shift key for about 5 seconds will toggle your letters
to all caps. Best thing is to go into accessibility in the control panel
and siable the sticky keys for shift, control, and there might be one
more. I forget because it's the first thing I disable when I install a
new copy of Windows.
