There's another way: if you have more than one choice of audio output
device, some other choice could be enabled as the default choice.  This
happens with say bluetooth headsets, which don't work until you go into
the sounds option of the control panel and make them the default audio
device.  then the sound card stops working.  Something else might be
made the default audio output device.
