Matt: I disagree with Andy's comments regarding servicing of Braille cells.

I have a Focus, and my biggest issue with it is probably its size: if you
are using a laptop, and have to be mobile, the Focus is too heavy and
large.

I also believe that once agencies have purchased equipment, blind people do
have a responsibility to budget for its maintenance.

When we have these sorts of discussions, little regard is paid to the fact
that Braille displays are fragile. My machine is outside of its warranty,
and the cells have never failed. However: they do need to be serviced
every now and then. I pay for the servicing, not the employer.

The display is mine - not the employer's and although I do not know the
details of Andy's situation (and I do not need to know) I think that some
care is required before conclusions are made which are based on the case of
not knowing all of the facts.

Andy is very correct in that the Focus is very flexible with many controls
which can be configured by Window-Eyes.

I guess my point is that the "heads up" provided is not automatically
enough for an informed decision - it can only be seen as part of your
overall research.

Thanks for the heads up on this model of display. I'll stay clear away
from it then.

My employer purchased for me an FS Focus 40. it is a neat display from the
design standpoint because there are different ways to do the same thing,
and it is the only display that I have seen that has a Perkins style keypad
that you can use to issue various commands. Also, I believe that they are
the least expensive desktop displays in terms of cost per cell. However,
you get what you pay for. Right after the warranty expired I started
having cells go bad. My employer doesn't pay for PMA's, and I cannot
afford to keep up the PMA. There are so many bad cells that it is almost
unusable. i know others who have experienced the same situation, so there
must be some quality control issues. if I had unlimited funds, I would buy
the Humanware Brailliant.
