Hi Kathy.
I think the list has been about as useful as it is going to be here.
It's time for you to piece together all the feedback you've gotten
from the last month or so and make some decisions.
How many cells do you want?
Do you want braille input as well as display, and are you willing to
trade cell space for the ability to input braille?
How much do you want to pay?
What is your primary screen reader going to be?
Do you need portability?
Which braille cells and control surface do you like best?
In order to take your research to the next level, you must answer
these questions for yourself, now. I have preferences, but my
preferenses may not be yours, and so for me to say, "Buy a braille
connect from humanware because it's the best quality at the best
price", that isn't going to help you. You may hate the way baum
braille cells feel. You may not want input, but you might want 80
cells, in which case, the braille connect would be all rong for you.
I suggest you go back and answer all the above questions to your own
satisfaction. Then for any that you can't answer, do two things.
First come back to the list with a very specific want list and very
specific questions, such as, "What is the smallest most portable 80
cell display on the market?"
And, go in to a service senter and look at braille displays. Even if
you live 1 or 200 miles from your nearest major center, it's worth the
$150 train ticket to go shopping when you consider how much the
hardware costs, and how much use it will be in transcription school.
Best,
Erik
