Hi, there are two ways of setting up windows on a mac.

If you run the two os seperately, then you can only run a 32 bit windows. Bootcamp does not support 64 bit windows, although this will probably be upgraded in snow leppard. Fusion is a program that can be used to run windows as a mac OS 10 program. It does support 64 bit windows, and it also supports a number of other opperating systems, most of which I've never heard of.

Of course, WE still doesn't support 64 bit, therefore, even with vmware fusion, you can't get access to 64 bit windows. NVDA is coming along fast in this regard, but it isn't a commercial screen reader, and if you need it for school or work it may not have the features you want.

I run window-eyes in my vm, and it works very well except for the irritation that apple removed the built in number pad from the laptop lines. Most upsetting.

In any event, if you are running mac, then you have a native 64 bit OS that is fully accessible. That you can use for most of your day-to- day computing such as web, email, typing, downloading, burning, and so on. Then you go into windows when you want a program like K1000 that you don't want to part with because you spent a lot of money on it.

Erik and all,

Can you do this with a MacBook? Or can you set up Windows on a Mac to run in 32 bit? Because if you can, then one may still have synths like DecAccess32 or Elequence to use in the Windows environment.

Hum, There is definitely a compadibility wizard, but I'm not sure
how intuitive it is. For example, 64 bit windows can run programs in 32 bit mode. So, in that sense they are compadible, IE they will work.

So whether the 64 bit compadibility wizard checks for compadibility of
32 bit programs I don't know.

Have a thought, does vista 64bit have a compatibility wizard? I
would be
very curious if it does and whether it would help with the 32 to 64
bit
problem.

With a smile.

Hi, well I can tell you about my experience installing window-eyes on
windows XP professional x64 edition. Mileage may vary depending on
the
hardware and drivers in your system.

The install worked like a charm until the very end when the installer
rebooted the computer. When it tried to load the video support
after the
reboot with window-eyes installed, the screen went a deep colour, like
really dark grey or light black and refused to show anything. WE
gave an
error that the video support wasn't properly installed and
rebooted. So the
computer was in an infinite loop until I turned window-eyes off.

At that point, I uninstalled We, but the monitor was still this very
strange
dark grey/light black and completely blank, even with WE supposedly
completely removed from the system.

Fortunately it was a clean install, and I hadn't yet turned off system
restore. I was able to restore back to a time when my video worked
fine and
the screan came back to life.

So, in my limitted experience, trying to install we on a 64 bit OS
simply
rendered the system useless to any one.

Have a question. If someone buys a computer with a 64 bit, would a screen reader still work on it but at a 32 bit rate? In other words,

It may be a difficult job to convert WE to support a 64 bit OS but
it is also getting difficult to find a computer that isn't running a
64
bit OS.
If you are in need of a new computer in the near future you can't
purchase the latest and greatest because of your need to use a screen reader. In the past GW has been proud of being first to support new features and functions and I sure hope they meet this need real soon.

Hi,
Ok. Time for my rant hehehehe
Well, there are many big differences between the 32 and 64 bit
O.S.es.
These differences
make it impossible to do a simple "port". I have had to do the
exercise of "port"ing software from older platforms to newer and
from
one type of platform to another in the UNIX world. I feel GW's pain
when contemplating the code/technique changes.
Believe me, its going to be a very long and painful process. The
Unit

Testing alone will probably take months. The data types are
entirely
different, structures of O.S. constants are changed, i/o structures
and the list goes on and on..
Any documentation
I find for porting from 32 to 64 reads like "Gone With The Wind" or
atleast as long of a read as the entire Chicago Metro phone book.
For those who didn't quite get the psychobabble above, lets try
this.
Lets
take
a car that was designed to have 13inch wheels and retrofit it to use
30inch tires.
Think of some of the steps needed to fix the problem. Simply
jacking
up the car wouldn't help as the size of the tires are big enough
that
they would touch front to back. Ok ok ok. that is a little
extreme,
but, these kind of thought processes are what will have to happen
for
a good portion of the existing WE product.
I guess the purpose of this email is to say that 32bit O.S.es will
be
around for quite a while. Some will have to do some extra work to obtain vista 32 bit. Where it is a pain, what in life is easy. So,
take a deep breath and be patient.
Good
things come to those who wait.
With a smile..

Subject: Re: Will we7 run on 4 g 64 system You have a conflict here. If you upgrade to 4 gb memory, then you need to upgrade to a 64 bit
OS

to use all four gb.
If you upgrade to 64 bit OS then window-eyes will not run.
You can upgrade to 3 gb and use the vista that comes with, although
it

doesn't say here whether that is 32 or 64 bit. 32 bit OS' support
up
to 3 gb memory, so that's it as far as that goes.
This situation is benighted, rong, and increasingly irritating.
Unfortunately blind
windows users are stuck.
