Good morning Darrell,
Interesting, because those sspecs match the Acer Aspire One I just
bought straight down the line. A few things you should know, this is
my primary machine with Windows, and is very sufficient in this role.
The specs on the current Acer Aspire One are identical to the MSI Wind
you described below, i.e. 1.6 ghz processor, 160 gig drive, and a six
cell battery. The machine has a solid feel back to front. The open
lid does not feel wobbly, the power jack is well fitting, and the
keyboard has a decent touch. As an aside, the built in microphone
will not win awards, but works well for things like SKYPE.
On the right side of the machine from the front are the two audio
jacks, two USB ports, and an SD card slot. On the left front to
back are an SD card slot, a third USB port, the ethernet port, the
monitor port and the power jack. As is
true for many laptops, the touch pad is easy to brush against, but can
be disabled. The WIFI works well and is easy to set up. On the stock
6 cell battery, I am getting four or five hours, depending upon what I
am doing. The things that can bite you are stand by mode and
hybernate. I have seen these work on a few laptops with speech, e.g.
the Dell I used in my last job that revived without a whimper. This
machine does not revive talking from either stand by or hybernation.
You need to disable both of these in the power management, including
going into stand by when you close the lid. You can turn on narrator
and kill/revive Window-Eyes, but it is not what you want to be doing.
There is a 9 cell battery now available for this machine, the verdict
is still out on how well this works. The main thing I am hearing thus
far is that it is heavy. The best price I have seen thus far on the
Acer Aspire One is $350 from bestbuy.com.
I cannot speak to the MSI Wind below, but feel safe saying this is a
great little machine.

Hello Everyone,
A friend and I have been researching these netbook computers. We're looking
seriously at the MSI Wind model NB10060. The specs look great with a 6 cell
battery, 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 160 GB HD, Wi-Fi, etc. Others have
recommended the Acer Aspire One as a good, accessible machine with Window-Eyes,
but I don't like its specs nearly as much. Does anyone out here actually have
the MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One or another similar machine? If so, how well does
it work for you out in the real world of Internet access, note taking and other
basic uses? We plan to use them in college, so a good solid keyboard is among
the most critical attributes. Should we really be considering these systems, or
should we really think about waiting a bit longer for this technology to
develop further?
Thanks,
Darrell
