Hello Larry and list,

I'm trying to track down a problem I'm having playing Adobe Flash content on
the PC I'm writing this post with. Whenever I bring up written or audio
adobe flash content, I see aspects of the player but the content will not
read or play properly unless I get lucky and it does. Fortunately for
Window Eyes, Adobe content I wish to play seems to work fine! I have the
problem when using my other screen reader. Another PC I have has the other
screen reader only and that isn't giving me grief with adobe flash content.
Now to the meat of this post. I decided to uninstall Window Eyes. I then
put it back again since the problem wasn't solved by unloading WE. I'm
finding now that I have reinstalled Window Eyes, it is working much better!
I of course saved the 7.01 upgrade file and I'd say this program is
demonstrating to me how rock solid it is! I make minimal adjustments to the
program. Even Window Eyes Eloquence is much better! I'm running it at a
maximum volume and it doesn't pop very much if at all! I hope to do more
with Window Eyes since reinstalling it! I of course am using Windows XP
home with SP3. I can't speak for Vista since I never have used it! The
only changes I have made to Window Eyes is change to the Eloquence voice
engine. I of corse set the speech rate to 60 with screen, keyboard and
mouse. The only script I have added is the quick hot key shut down script
which shuts down Window Eyes without verification! As I see it, this should
be a part of the scripts which come with Window Eyes. That's all I have
done since reloading it back in again! I've done nothing more with it!
Window Eyes seems to work right out of the box so to speak! Oh yes! I
changed the keyboard layout to laptop, turned off the daily tips, placed the
menu structure into advance, and that's it! If I shut off any script, it
would be the self completing script. That bugs me, otherwise, I have the
choice of using scripts or not doing so, I also have the choice of which
scripts I would use! The bottom line is choices! You've got them! Window
Eyes can be tailored to work with any number of computers including apple
from what I understand! I can't speak for apple interfaces either! I'll
let someone else do so. If you haven't done so already, unload, then
reinstall Window Eyes and see if you get differing results as I have!

Please feel free to write me if you wish to ask me about what other access
technology I use! I'll give you my candid observations of both!

Jim Aldrich

Subject: Scripts, a Mixed blessing?

This is a post that I hesitate to write, knowing as I do that some here are
sensitive toward anything that they perceive as criticism of their screen
reader of choice. But I've always tried to write what I see as the truth and
> I doubt if I'll stop anytime soon. So folks, I'm just expressing my
> concerns here and wondering if anyone else shares them. And maybe along
> the way, someone will offer a suggestion that moves toward a solution for
> me and for anyone else who might be struggling with a similar situation.

> Here's the thing. When I run version 7.01 with scripts turned off, I find
> the program to be just as reliable and "rock solid" as ever.
> Unfortunately, when I do run scripts, I'm finding that to even term this
> version as stable
would be a bit of a stretch. If scripts are running, I consistently run up
against errors at startup. And this is with running primarily the scripts
that were developed by GW Micro themselves. Further, this is happening on
several computers, be it those that I use for work or those that emphasize
more personal use.

Is it logical to say that all of them have problems? I don't think so. The
ram varies, the specs vary, even the scripts that I have loaded vary. But
the problem of instability when scripts are running remains the same. I have
one machine that displays a Window-Eyes error every time I try to update any
script. Note that I am receiving a Winow-Eyes error, not a Windowserror. I
posted a message the other day with the error spelled out, but received no
response, so maybe I'm alone in this.

opened "find" in either Internet Explorer or Firefox it took over the entire
screen and caused Window-Eyes to go silent. Turning off scripts solved the
problem./ The alternative would be to test the situation by turning off one
script then another then another and another until figuring out which one

diagnosing issues generated by some aspect of my accessibility software. The
ability to run scripts with a respectable degree of reliability is part of
what I believed I was purchasing.

get the program to run reliably and let me get some work done. Does anyone
else share my concern or am I alone in seeing what I'm seeing? That's what
I'm really wondering here. I can only add that such findings could indeed
affect future purchases. If I have to turn off a primary feature of a piece
of software, be it accessibility software or anything else occupying space
on my machines, I am compelled as a consumer to seriously consider my
direction in future purchases.

Ok, enough said. I hope the result of my expressing this concern will be a
positive and constructive move toward a solution. Thanks much for offering
some time to my thoughts.
