The way that I found to fix the focus problem in IE 8 is to hit alt t to go to the tools menu, then open options and pick the advanced tab. You will find a long list of settings that you can change. Under the heading "Browsing", you will find 23 items listed. The seventeenth item is "reuse windows". Turn it off and new info that shows up on a page will now show in a new window that can now easily be read. This also helps with Adobe reader which can now be closed without also closing IE.

The work around for your problem is to hit ctrl - q if you got multiple tabs open an left or right to switch to the other tab. That's better then ctrl - tab for my opinion. The other method is to hit ctrl - 1 to 9 I believe to switch to those tab quickly. I don't open so many page at a time, so the most I use its up to 5 or so.
