Subject: RE: web sites selecting JAWS as only screen reader
I heard no cries of injstice, stamping of feet, shaking of rattles and
holdings of breat until faces turned blue from Window-Eyes users when
Itunes became accessible and gave huge credit to GW Micro while
pretending Freedom Scientific didn't even exist. There were squeals and
coos of delight when that happened. Perhaps FS or JAWS users just
happened to take some initiative that GW Micro and Window-Eyes users
simply couldn't be bothered with. It's possible, you know.--D.K.

Don is correct. Go to
www.bestbuy.com and click on weekly ad. Right at the top is a link "for
visually-impaired users". This is the text you see when you access this
link:
How to access this weekly ad site with the aid of a screen reader...
Offering web solutions that are accessible is important here at
ShopLocal.
To best
assist guests that wish to use screen reader software to access the
weekly
ad site,
the following three easy steps need to be understood and followed:
1. ShopLocal only supports the screen reader
JAWS 8.X for WindowsR, from Freedom Scientific,
which is the most popular screen reader worldwide.
2.To access the weekly ad site, all guests must have already installed
the
required
Adobe Flash Player 9 browser plug-in. If you have not already, this
free 1.4 MB download from Adobe is easily installed by following this
link.
3. To use the JAWS screen reader with the weekly ad site most
effectively,
all guests
must download and install a set of
free scripts (ZIP file that is 88K) from the Adobe website
as a one-time activity. These scripts enable some of the accessibility
features
of the weekly ad site and allow guests to utilize the standard JAWS
keyboard
shortcuts
than would otherwise be possible. Please note that these scripts only
work
for users
of JAWS 8.x and later.
For more information on these add-on JAWS scripts, please visit the
following help
page that Adobe hosts that talks more about
using Adobe Flex applications with JAWS
I do not understand why they feel this site is best accessed with JAWS,
but
to me at least, that's not providing accessibility with a screen reader.
I'm no going to look for contact info and give them a piece of my mind.
I recommend others do the same.
