I am guessing that you may have accidentaly locked your function keys. Some keyboards have that feature. In such scenario, when you press alt+f4, only the alt key is taken and the cursor focus is taken to the file menu which has the shortcut "f" hence, you hear "f".
I don't know about all keyboards but some keyboards have the function lock key to the right most of the function keys (to the right of f12). Or, I believe, there is a way to do it from your computer but I don't know how to do it this way. Hope this helps. If you reply to this message it will be delivered to the original sender only.
