Chris and Allan, the specs are good, and others with Dell laptops and vista (well, at least one other), report it's fine and stable, so I know you're right in what's left.
It's either a virus, some weird hardware problem that manifests itself with alll kinds of random errors that effect all different software (maybe a memory error for instance), or some very badly behaved software which is writing into memory it doesn't own. I have been looking for ways to avoid the vista reinstall, such as different virus checkers, and turning off various software, because I have a *lot* of software loaded on this laptop, and I don't always have the source any longer, or I don't have the unlocking codes needed for installation, and a reinstall would just kill all the things I use the computer for. I do follow all the maintenance suggestions you guys have mentioned, and I do run 3 or 4 anti-malware packages regularly. I'm going to do a little more investigating before I give up and start from scratch. One thing I can recommend to everyone: PrevX has found viruses that none of the others have, and whatever I do I will add PrevX to my other antimalware packages. it looks for "stealthed" viruses which hide in the boot record for instance, and evidently none of the others do this. thanks for the advice.
