Terri, I don't mean to drag this thread out, but, some things need to be pointed out.
1. Like you said, it doesn't matter what organization funded this project. In my estimation, it isn't your or my position to decide how funds are spent unless we were in charge of the organization. Of cource, it is our right to say how dumb or smart an idea is. 2. At this point, a truly blind friendly car isn't possible due to a lot of factors. These include the U.S. road infrastructure, technological limitations, legal ramifications and so on. So, your point about these subjects are correct. Now, lets look at the future. People said we would never fly and look what happened. 3. How states decide the meaning of a qualified driver is a matter of public law. If there is a desire to have them changed, by all means, contact the legislators and make a plea. 4. The mention of this project on this list doesn't bother me in the least. Like I said before, this project is probably mentioned all over the place. 5. Driving a car really isn't the point of having that ability. The real advantage is independance. I would be so happy if I could say I want to go to the library, go jump into my convayance(car, buggy, space ship or whatever) and zoom there. This way, I don't have to walk a gozillion miles, set up a ride with special transit, ask friends/family for a ride or deal with public transit schedules. These opinions are strictly my own. If anyone wants to take exception with them, please contact me off list. If anyone agrees with me, they can contact me off list as well. I will keep dreaming. The money spent on this project should have been spent on something which really would have been of practical help to the blind. One idea is to make funds available to help people buy the adaptive products they need for independence and employment. Just think! If a product like the BrailleSense + could be subsidized so the end user could pay, say, $500.00 instead of the $5,995.00 that would be helpful!
