Brian,

I'm sending this to you and the list, so you can get answers from others
as well.

I tried the laptop layout for a while, but it has some problems, and
some key combinations that don't work properly, and getting help from
others is always a problem, since they'll often give you specific key
commands to use, and they of course won't work in the laptop layout.

So, I took Rauls suggestion and went back to the standard keyboard
layout, even on a laptop. You can do this because your laptop should
have an extra key, in the bottom left of the keyboard, usually second
from the left, which is called the "fn" key. when you hold it down,
your laptops group of keys centered around the u i and o become a
numeric pad.

try this out in the key describer mode, and you'll eventually catch on
to how they've mapped your particular alphabetic keys to numeric keypad
keys.

then, when you need a window eyes standard keyboard command such as
control plus numeric pad center to read the current line, you make that
by holding down the control key, and the fn key, and the letter i which
is the numeric pad center key.

this takes a lot of practice, and there are some key combinations when
end up needing you to hold down four keys at once all over the keyboard,
so it's not perfect. however, I did try the alternatives and found them
even harder, so I think this is your best choice.

a lot of people point out that you can easily connect a standard
keyboard to your laptop; either with a usb cable or via bluetooth. if
you aren't leaving your house or where-ever, then this may be your best
option.

some people even carry a standard keyboard with them when they go mobile
and take their laptop somewhere. and there are folding standard
keyboards which are designed for this kind of thing.

so, one or the other of these options should work for you I hope.

hth,

Chip
