Microsoft will continue to provide security updates through 2014. As for
telephone-based tech support? I'm frankly surprised they've offered it
as long as they have. My past experiences with their tech support have
been less than spectacular, and thanks to outsourcing, I was barely able
to understand the representative to whom I spoke.
You're much better off searching online for Windows XP issues than
calling Microsoft about it. Chances are that someone else has
experienced your Windows issue already, and more importantly, posted
instructions for how to correct it. There are all sorts of tech support
forums a Google away that should be able to help.

welcome to the real world of microsoft.
i had the same problem with vista 3 years ago.
there was no free service. they have been charging $35 per hour even
if they do not solve your problem.
they also told me i had a OEM version even though i bought my copy at
office max as a full retail boxed copy and go back to my computer
manufacture for help first.
i'm the manufacturer. i built the computer. grin
