I would like to remind all that their is an item in the menus for using
either insert key as a modifier. This is found under control panel,
keyboard, special keys. Arrow up once on this submenu and you'll see
"enable both insert keys. It will say on or off. Press enter to change it
to the other. RD

Subject: RE: Strange response to insert-t
Hi again Peggy,
Your comment on the insert key prompted me to do some checking and here is
what I found. All this shows is that different manufactures do things
different and you need to do some playing to see what works.
I did some testing on 3 computers. A desktop with a standard full-size
keyboard, a Toshiba notebook (no separate number pad) and an Asus netbook.
As one might expect, the full-size keyboard performed exactly as expected.
I was able to use both insert keys to perform various functions including
insert-t, insert-numpad-8 etc
Next I tried the Toshiba laptop and found that I was only able to use one
of
the insert keys for each function and which one depends on where the other
keys are. For example, When performing tasks that require the embedid
numpad (j k l ...) I had to use the imbedded insert key FN-M. The other
insert key (the dedicated one) will not work in this case. When doing
other
commands such as ins-t, ins-r, ins-b etc, the embed insert key (FN-M) will
not work but the dedicated insert key works fine.
Finally I tried the Asus netbook. On this machine, either insert key
works
fine for tasks such as ins-t, ins-r ins-b etc. However, the dedicated
insert key can not be used with the embedded keypad because the FN-INSERT
key is the numlock so you can not press FN-INS-8 so in that case you must
use FN-M-8.
Now, that is about as clear as mud! <grin>
The bottom line is, if you try one of the insert keys and it doesn't work
as
you expect, try the other. Some of these might be finger twisters, but
about the only way to figure out what is going to work for you is a lot of
trial and error.
Have a nice rest of the weekend!
Scott

Subject: Strange response to insert-t
Hi, all. I tried doing insert-t on my netbook (once I located insert) to
check the time, but instead of saying the time and date, WE said the title
of the application I was in. I double checked with key describer to make
sure I was using the right keys, and I was. Even key describer didn't
recognize it as the time/date hotkey. Is there some other way I'm
supposed
to do this with a netbook, or could this indicate that our netbook is
interpreting the insert-t as something else, and I'll have to find out
what
once my husband and I can go through the manual?
Also, speaking of time, I installed the hourly chime script on the
netbook,
and right around 3:00,I lost speech and had to reboot. I'm thinking
netbooks can't handle multiple sounds, so I uninstalled the script. Do
any
of you guys use the hourly chime script on your netbooks?
Peggy
