Ok, thanks for that info Jeff. But here's an interesting situation. When I go to weather underground site, directly, type in "chicago, il" for the location, I get the 26.7 degree temperature reported for U.S. Cellular Field, which is where the White Sox play. But that's like 18 miles southeast of O'Hare, which is supposedly the official site. There is a table on the wunderground site that shows all the reporting locations, and only the U.S. Cellular Field site show 26.7, which is what you get by typing "chicago, il" into the search box. So there is no doubt the 7 am report is coming from Cellular Field.
By the time I send this message, it will have changed to the 8 am report. So the wunderground site isn't defaulting to official airport locations, if they are available? Or is it possible, that my settings on that site are customized. It may be possible for Chicago, but not for all the other cities I find discrepancys for. Perhaps the sollution is to type in the correct airport code for a location if one has one. But it's unfortunate, if the weather underground site is not providing official reporting information, for major city names by default. I suspect most people believe that is what they are getting when they type in a major city name. I certainly did until now. I'm not particularly a weather buff person, just curious about why discrepancies have occured, which you answered, but am wondering if there's anything that can be done, other than typing in an airport code, to get accurate official information. Hi, I've been a bit suspicious about the accuracy of the temperature info coming from the weather or not script. I just checked the Fairbanks temp for local time 4:00 am, today. They report a temperature of 37 below zero with clear skies. The weather or not scripts says: Fairbanks, AK Temperature: -28.8 F Humidity: 74% Pressure: 29.83in Conditions: Clear Wind Direction: West Wind Speed: 0.0mph The temp is off by 8 degrees if you round it off. Yes, I know it's cold, but it's still off by 8 degrees. So where is the weather or not script getting it's data. The Alaska weather line is being hourly updated for Fairbanks, (907) 458-3745. Currently, at 7:00 am local time, today, the NOAA weather service reports the Chicago temperature as 24 degrees, at O'Hare. However the weather or not script says: Chicago, IL Temperature: 26.7 F Humidity: 78% Pressure: 30.44in Conditions: Light Snow Wind Direction: NW Wind Speed: 4.0mph So, rounding off, we are off by 3 degrees. Both instances, Fairbanks and Chicago, we are on the high side with weather or not script. So where is the script getting its data from. Can this be chosen by the end user? Why the discrepancy? Thanks for any info you can provide. Best, Steve Weather Underground.
