I use Thunderbird and have no problems with it. I've been using Thunderbird
solidly since May 2007 when it was at version 2.0.4 or something and I'm
now at the latest 3.0 version.
I will not get into all the specifics as to what i do for best
performance, but i will list the 4 most important things to keep in mind.
1. Turn preview pane off. This is done from the view/layout menu or by
pressing F8.
2. From Tools/Options, uncheck the load Thunderbird start page.
3. Uncheck the compose html messages in your account settings.
4. From Tools/Options/Advanced/Read, choose the radio button to open new
messages in an existing window rather than in a new tab. This way you can
press esc to close a message when you are done.
I may consider doing a podcast on this since people have been asking about
Thunderbird and WE of late.

I am sorry, the pure lack of good keyboard navigation in that
application
doesn't warrant such support. If Microsoft gets there act together and
provides stable keyboard inneraction to the application then I would
agree.
The folder list for one is a pain in the neck.
