richard, we too have such an archiving scheme; but ours is done by a piece of software called Enterprise Vault, and it just automatically brings up the archived message, and you may see a short status message while this is happening, there's nothing a user need do.
However, when deleting a message, which we are allowed to do, the same type of inaccessible buttons also appear for me; asking if you want to delete it from the archive or just your folder. I usually do manage to find them with the mouse cursor, although in one dialog there were only graphics, and I had to get sighted help to label the graphic buttons.
