I used the forms that I downloaded from the IRS website, and found they
work reasonably well.
It helps to be familiar with the forms and how information needs to be
entered, but the form does the math for you.
I also had some very helpful conversations with the IRS advice people.  
State taxes here in Iowa are a bit different.  It's doable with their
online forms, but you have to do your own math.  But I didn't find that
to be a big problem as I entered figures in Excell to do the calculations
for me.
