Ok, think I understand. You mean, that basically, what the patch does, is to
keep the sound card driver open, all the time? But then, just an immediate
question: Would it be possible, in the event switching (automatically) of
sound card is needed, for WE to 'close' the driver, switch card, and
'reopen' the driver? Even under XP? Just a thought... :)

David,
Nope, didn't say we increased the speed. I said we increased
responsiveness. How fast does it start and stop speaking is
responsiveness. And this shouldn't sound strange at all. If you open the
sound card, send the speech and close the sound card driver then you will
always get the active sound card but the process of opening and closing
the sound card can and usually is a very time consuming task which can
cause ugly responsiveness. You mention you didn't notice any difference
but I think if you polled the Window-Eyes users you would find by far the
majority have found a huge increase. Some sound cards were effected more
then others but most were greatly enhanced. The speed of your machine had
nothing to do with it. The quality of your sound card driver however
effected it greatly.
Windows XP doesn't have the ability to automatically switch when you keep
the sound card open all the time. Microsoft would have to answer why that
is the case... Microsoft has certainly fixed this in Windows 7. As for
Vista it is hard to tell. We had issues just getting our USB bluetooth
dongle working under Vista.

Doug

Hmmm! Do I get you right here? You increased the speed, and therefore
sound card cannot auto-switch any longer? If I get you right, that
sounds strange. How has speed anything to do with the switching
capability? And XP won't let you switch sound card? I don't get this,
unless something in your patch mismatch with XP. And just another note; I
don't really find the patch for Eloquence has sped up my speech all that
much. Then again, I am running XP on a 4gb, 2x2,7GHZ machine, so the
power of the machine should by far be enough for WE. But as I said, for
me that whole patch for Eloquence never really made that much of a
difference. And if the auto-switching of sound card got lost... Well, I
never seen GW mentioned this drawback for the XP (and maybe Vista) users,
mentioned before. Maybe I have overlooked something, but if not, I find
it is a bit late to tell us about the loss of one of the features.

That is correctly. Window-Eyes 7.2 (or 7.11 with the Eloquence patch)
has greatly increased the responsiveness of the speech. There is no
comparison between the two. But in doing this Windows XP users lost the
ability to automatically switch when the default sound card changed on
the fly. So yes, Windows XP users regressed in this respect but we feel
the far superior response time is worth it. Also as Aaron stated,
Windows Vista and Windows 7 will do the auto switching.

Doug

That's very odd Aaron as until I upgraded yesterday it was working as I

Sound card switching is only supported under Windows Vista and up.
Windows XP doesn't let us do it.

Yusuf,
What version of Windows are you using?

Hi all, I'm really liking the responsiveness of WE 7.2. I have one
question. In WE 7.1 if I plugged in a USB wireless set of
headphones
and switched the primary sound, (control panel sounds and audio
devices), to the headphones all sound coming out of the PC
including
WE would come from the headphones. In this version of WE I have to
go
in to the synthesiser selection, (WE control panel), and choose it.
After I unplug the USB wireless headphones I have to restart WE in
order to get sound to come out of the main speakers even though for
all other computer sounds it automatically switches.
Is there any way to get WE to automatically switch in the way that
it
did with the previous version.
Cheers
