Thanks. Basically, I do agree - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The thing is,
I have a few cases where WE seem to lock up, with no explainable reason. And
since GW, in cases like that, encourages us to make sure of having the latest
hardware drivers installed, I thought I would give it a try.

Both my video and sound cards, are placed directly on the motherboard. The
video being a NVidia, and the Sound card being from Realtek. OK, go to their
homepage - for any of these manufacturers - and try to find your hardware. To
me, it almost feels like they have released one new model every week for an
eternity. At least, that's what it feels like, when you see the list of serial
numbers to choose from. And, how will I know, which number correspond to my
actual hardware? Is there a simple way, in WinXP, to get to the actual
model/serial/and whatever else is needed for model specific information for
your installed hardware?

Thanks again,

my philosophy about drivers is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If your
system is functioning well, there is no need to do anything. if your system is
only a year old, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. if you have a
device that is malfunctioning, updating the driver may or may not solve the
problem. I do not trust these driver detective programs. I tried Driver
detective once, and for one thing, it didn't work well with speech, and, for
another, it often recommended drivers that were older than the ones that were
already installed. if you need a driver for a certain device, the best thing
to do is to go to the web site of the manufacturer of the device. That way,
you will always be assured of getting the latest driver.

My desktop computer is a non-branded 'build it yourself' product. It's now
a year old, and I want to check if there is any updates for my hardware
drivers. Does anyone in here, have a suggestion as to a good, reliable, webpage
- or software - that will scan my computer, and then lead me directly to the
correct downloadable for new driver updates for my hardware? I am running
WE7.2, under WinXP Pro; and I need the software/webpage be as accessible as
possible. Please let me know, if you have any favorite solution to the
challenge. Thanks for all feedback!
