You're better off just pressing ctrl+enter. This inserts a page break, but it turn will insert the page number after the break.

Dear list,
Apologies for the off topic post but does anyone know the procedure to
insert page numbers in Microsoft word 2007? Any help would be very much
appreciated
I have attempted it by pressing alt then right arrow to insert. I then
tab down to page numbers and press enter. I am then given a choice of
where to place the numbers, either at the top or bottom of the page. I
press enter on the bottom of the page. I am given other options here of
different styles of numbering etc. I press enter on the number style 1,
2, 3 etc.
I then get an option similar to inserting a header and footer and can't
go any further from this point.
Kindest Regards, John
