I picked this up from another list and it did work for me. See below.
I edited out the parts of the message which aren't relevant.

There are lots of places to check speed. I use testmy.net. It is a
strange page.
Once the page comes up, do a find for download and you should land on
download test.
Then search for large and the second occurance should say largest test.
Give it
a bit after this link and search for results. Mine comes out at 5.1 meg,
but I'm
paying extra for that on dsl.
