recently in another thread, I mentioned to someone that his problem sounded
more like his function keys weren't working, rather than it being a WE
specific problem.

Well, a day or two later, just as some sci-fi author describes a term he
calls "synchronicity", I get a new keyboard at work, and it's function keys
aren't working! It turns out, at least MS (and so I think others will do
this), are making keyboards where the function keys have been assigned other
duties (to start up various programs automatically). the keyboard now
includes an extra key, to the right of F12, called F-lock, and it's used to
switch the function keys back and forth between their standard function key
values, and these new features MS has added to their keyboard.

So, if it looks like your function keys aren't working, and you have a
relatively new keyboard, and there seems to be a key immediately to the
right of F12 as if it were F13, then try pressing this key, it just may be
the F-lock key.
