look in your systray for an icon labeled "volume". right click it and
choose "recording devices".

if it's recording too softly, you've got both a volume for each channel to
work with, and a mic boost which you can turn on (if it's on), and it can be
turned on at two different levels.

finally, my driver also has a "speech enhancement" option which you can
enable, which improves speech quality and reduces background noise.

you may need a new mic, especially if you're using a desktop mic. check out
http://emicrophones.com
and write the owner; he'll give you recommendations based on what you need
and want. headset mics, especially a noise reducing one, do better imho
than a desktop mic, and also do better than the built-in mics in laptops.

if you're getting hissing and popping sounds from a boom mic, then you've
got it too close to your mouth. if you're using a mic built into the
ear-piece of a bluetooth headset, well they don't work that well either.
