Although I do see a good reason for the tech department, in general to be concerned as to not letting everyone 'pop' whatever software onto their system, I do see little reason for them to worry about WE. OK, there is the scripts. If a scripter really wants to, he will be able to cause a good deal of trouble on the computer. Usually though, if they are all that concerned, I guess their system already are LOADED down with a ton of security software of many kinds. And, in such a case, the scripter would have to REALLY want to break that particular combination of security. Fortunately, that is a bit of a challenge. And even more fortunately, such a script would be discovered by the community, and I guess pretty soon be removed from SC; if ever that would happen.
Apart from the TINY risk of scripts - which is that tiny, I do hold you would have to be rather paranoid to not let WE on your system - I have a hard time, in realizing what they are concerned of. Maybe, you should ask them, and get back, when you know some specifics, that we might not have thought of. Basically, WE does its job, reading what is on the screen, and translating it into speech and/or Braille. Seems to me, they simply don't know the nature of a Screen Reader, so you might want to edducate them a bit. Also, do let them know, on this very list, there is hundreds or maybe even thousands of people, who are on workplaces, schools, or any other thinkable kind of networks, that all want to be saved the disaster of malware. If there was any real chance of WE interfering with the security of systems like that, doubtfully GW would have stayed in business for 20 years. And, doubtfully all these thousands of users would have gone for a screen reader, that really would impose any risk on the computer system. Let them know, that keeping their security software up-to-date, then letting Window-Eyes have its permissions on the net, should be no real threat; and is being done all over the globe, every single day, all year around, in numerous settings, and from what I can memorize, has never caused trouble to the network itself. You are left with fifty times more chances, that something on the network, some kind of software they are using, is causing trouble to WE, than what chances there would ever be, that WE would cause trouble to their system. Most cases, I do hold, IF there is a conflict between WE and the system, WE tends to back out; sometimes even a bit too easy, why we have sudden losses of speech, for instance.
