Have seen similar cases, although it usually happens to only some of the Windows sounds here.

First of all, try go to the Controlpanel, under Start|Settings. Here, go to the Sounds-and-audio-devices, and press Enter. Press Ctrl-Tab, to go to the second tab, and check if it shows any sounds for the different Windows actions.

Also, try go to the Display under Controlpanel, and see what theme you have currently active. It might have been changed. Put it back to Windows XP standard, and press Enter.

Now, see if any of this helps.

I have seen Adware, Spyware and other malware, that interferes with your sound settings. Even seen that dirty stuff deleting some of my sound files. So, before deeming what is wrong, I do suggest for you to run a thorough cleanup on your system. Don't trust, that your AntiSpyware, AntiVirus, or any other security software, will handle this kind of cases - no matter if you have set it to give you REALTIME protection. Do run a manual scan, with all the security packages you would happen to have installed. When you are fully assured your system is clean, try the above settings under the controlpanel. Then - just to make sure the best result - give your system a good old restart. I even do suggest for you to let it turn itself totally off, then turning it back on. Have seen some software updates, that do not install, when you choose RESTART under the Start menu. Whether this could lead to your loosing sound, I have no clear idea, yet better play safe.

Since you tell your WE speaks, apparently your sound card, and its driver, is all intact. This is why I get the feeling, some kind of setting in your XP will have got messed up.

Hope for you to find a solution.

By the way, in the volume tab, the Windows sounds, are adjusted by the WAVE slider. This is actually the same slider, that will adjust your speech synth. So, long as you have speech, you will have little luck in trying to restore your Windows sounds, in the Volume screen.

Subject: more on windows sounds

Thanks for all the responses. I'm sorry I forgot to say that I am running xp. I can find a group of volumes but none of them says windows sounds. It's just the windows sounds that doesn't work. All other sounds work fine. It's just the sound when you shut down or bring up windows and the sound it makes when you unplug a printer or scanner and things like that. It's just specifically windows sounds. I'll look more among the volumes but couldn't find one for windows. Thanks again for the great response.
