I don't think that most laptops will let you turn off your screen completely.  
The laptops I have used have the ability to switch to an external monitor or 
projector, but they are smart enough not to allow such a switch when there is 
no external device connected.  However, you can save some battery life by 
setting the screen to its lowest level of brightness and by setting the screen 
shutoff value in power management to as low as you can, probably a minute.  
Most laptops allow you to control the brightness using function keys along with 
the FN key, but which specific keys are used depends upon the computer.
