In general, when this happens and you can't hear what you're typing, I find a lot of times it's because the window isn't maximized. if you'll check the window when you're ready to type, and if you find it's not maximized, you could try to always remember to do it, or look into a script from GW called Window Manager, which will maximize specific windows which you tell it to, as they are created. It's very helpful.
