I've had the same situation witht the beta, but also had it before the beta. I did notitce, though, that even with google instant off, if you turn on browse mode manually instead of hitting the enter or search button, you still wil find some advertizing based n your search terms, at least that is what I found with google instant off. Maybe that is why the goolge search edit field is sluggish even before the beta.

I am running the beta on a Win 7 64 bit machine. I am using Google for my search engine and have Google Instant turned off.
