Hi Donald, Are you by chance running an app I've written called change_sound_card? I hate to think it's causing the problem, but it's the only app I know of which does change sound cards, and I haven't heard of anyone else complaining of this problem. Chip

I first set the default sound card in the control panel to my preferred choice. I set WE to use the default sound card in the DEC Talk WinEyes synthesizer dialog. And then working away, I suddenly lose speech. I start narrator, WE is still running, I open the WE control Panel and go to the synthesizers list, tab to the sound card and the sound card has been changed back to the computers built in sound card. I check the Windows control Panel. My preferred sound card is still the default. I switch back to WE CP, change the sound card back to default, WE starts speaking, I shut down Narrator, go back to work, until WE loses speech again. This has happened many times today. Any suggestions?
