Also, OmniPage, which I have been using for close to ten years. At least up to
version 15. I haven't had my hands on the newer versions, so can't speak for
them. Got mine off from EBay for a fairly good price, but even if you decide to
go directly to their homepage and get it there, I do hold it is FAR less than
the $1,000 that other software cost.
If you are familiar with places like Ebay and Amazon, I'd suggest you go there,
do a search for things like
OCR
and see what you get. If you come across a software that seems interesting, you
might want to get back on the list and ask if anyone have had their hands on
it. That would even educate the whole community.
Another option is of course, if you are not too scared to try new things, to go
to your favorite search engine, and do a search for
OCR freeware download
or the like. Pretty sure, there would be a few freeware out there. whether they
are accessible, can do the PDF-Text-OCR, and is reliable; I couldn't tell. But
would be nice if there was some alternatives.
Agreed, few people have $1,000 or more, to throw into yet another asistive
software. Everything that could possibly be done, so as to lower the cost of a
computer for a blind, would surely be appreciated.
Cases like this, I wish there was a spot on the web, where software that has
been reported to work well with screenreaders would be listed. That would have
been helpful in many cases. It even could have had one section for software
that is working smoothly, one for software that is possible to taylor to work
(i.e with an app); and maybe a section where it lists software for you to
definately stay clear of. Specially so, such a webpage would have been great,
since we see these kind of questions pop up on the list repeatedly.
GW, could this be an idea on your server? Or, anyone out there has a spare spot
on their website? Shouldn't take up too much space. No need to list every
given, possible, available software in the universe. Only meant for software
that is gennerally known, or software that people have come across, and that
has proven specially workable for the screen reader user.

So what are some inexpensive OCR programs that work well with Window
Eyes. I have a new Win7 machine and a new HP printer with a scanning program
that will not read OCR. My old Dell printer would scan to a word document and
could be read by Window-Eyes, but the HP program will not do this.
I really don't have $1,000 to spend on an OCR program but could really use
one.
Thanks for any ideas.

OK? And what if you happen to be the owner of OmniPage? Sure it could do
the trick as well. Or, I guess, even PaperPort.
In short, you need what is called an OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
software. And there is a few of them on the market. Some more accessible, some
far more expensive, some cheaper but still accessible, and some useless.
Just for your information!

Nothing will help this unless you have Open Book or Kurzweil 1000. The
reason is that these blank documents are scanned image files and no screen
reader will read them.
