I use the Acrobat Professional package, version 9. Yes, you do have to buy
it but if you belong to any professional organization chances are they will
have some type of discount. I think we paid $75 for 3 licenses. 

 

I like this program in part because it has fewer security flaws than the
reader but it also has a conversion tool that works fairly well and is
automatic for the most part, especially on web pages that end up as pure
graphic PDF files, converting them automatically to text. 

 

I use this at work a lot because no one can figure out how to set the
program for our scanner/copier/printer to export Adobe PDF in readable
formats. It gives back images that need to be converted. The nice part is
that I took the cost of the Acrobat software off my taxes as a work expense.

There are too many security issues with Adobe's reader.  The safer and
easier way is to use pdf to txt from the empowerment zone.
