Vaughan, These instructions apply to Word 2007, but I imagine that they may apply to 2010 as well. On the office button open Word options and then arrow down and highlight, advanced. Now if you start tabbing through the many check boxes you will come to one called, "use normal style for numbered or bulleted lists." This may be what you were needing? Hope this helps.
