I'm not a fan of bloatware either. But after reading this post I couldn't resist questioning your logic. To a blind person OCR is nothing other than a text to speech program. Therefore, I don't think it's quite on par with a vacuum cleaner and the other programs we already have on hand. I wouldn't expect it to be comparable to the thousand dollar wonderful options we already have available to all of us rich folks, but a little bit sure would go a long way. And to avoid the bloat, considering what it is, my personal preference in how it operates would be to have a hotkey which loads the program, does the scan, and another to close it once we've gotten the information we needed. I wouldn't mind the little extra time it takes because I wouldn't consider it a typical OCR program. Therefore, I wouldn't expect to be using it all that often. It's one of those things that, more often than not, when you need it you need it bad.

Tom

OK, I am going to wade in here with an opinion from a minion; namely me.

Is OCR technology a cool thing? Yes it is. Is OCR a text to speech
program function? I would argue that it is not.

If Window-Eyes stays away from OCR technology being built-in I think
this would be a good thing. I am not a proponent of software bloat. The
smaller my screen reading application can be the happier I am. If I was
to take the side of OCR should be an important part of any text to
speech application, I am sure that if I take the time to think about it,
I can come up with compelling reasons to also include a text editor, a
web browser, a reminder, a telephone dialling utility, a vacuum cleaner,
and so on.
