I have the same setup as was already described. I've never used alt+F4 to close a message. You can either use control+D to delete the present message and move on to the next one saving you the bother of having to first close the present message. I'll just delete all the messages I'm not interested in first and use the control+D to quickly move through the ones I am interested in. The other way I do it is after I've read a message and want to go back to the main list of messages, I just hit the escape key. it closes the message I'm in and puts me back in the list of messages and I can either leave it there and do a control+A to select them all and then hit the delete key or delete them one by one after their read.
