Steve!
Here is a small tip, that might just get you going right now. Not a replacement for Office, only a temporary solution.

Try go to
   http://www.textaloud.com
or,
   http://www.nextup.com
.

Here, download and install the TextAloud program. It should be able to open Word documents, and you will have a wonderful way of transfering your electronic documents into spoken word, and even have the chance of saving the result as MP3 files, if that would be of interest. Well, that is only a couple of the benefits of the software. Even if you don't want to use any of the benefits, it still should let you read the contents of the Word document.

I do believe it is something like 15 days of trial, with full functionality. Should give you enough time to figure your Office license issue. And, if you decide to buy TextAloud, you will be able to do so, for just under $30 USD. Besides, first you have bought the software, you are aproved for buying a long line of SAPI voices, in case that should ever be of interest to you.

Chip,

I was hoping to just use it to be able to open and read Word documents for a while until I figure out whether I can transfer a license from another machine. It sounds like it isn't worth it from what you have said.

Steve,

It doesn't seem to me to have any more capabilities than WordPad, if you can
still get that for your temporary use, then that might do you.

You can use Office starter to download an upgrade to full Office (or of
course probably buy full Office at a better price over the internet).

No one can download Office Starter, so I am unable to see if scripting would
help out the situation.

Chip

On my new laptop, there is something called Microsoft Office Starter. I
thought that this might work for me for a while
until I get Microsoft Office on that machine, but it does not seem to work
well with Window-Eyes. Is Microsoft Word
Starter a different program than Microsoft Word rather than just being a
limited version? I may still not have something
configured correctly but thought I'd ask here before I spend a ton of time
on this. Thanks for any information.
