Here's my take on Thunderbird.
It's not the most stable program going. I know sighted folks who have to
kill the process every few days if they leave their systems running and
also have to kill it sometimes the first time they run it after booting
up because the process loads but the window never comes up.
And in my experience Mozilla's upgrades only add problems. I began with
TB 3.1 on this new Win 7 system because I was forced to choose a new
email client. Over time I upgraded to 3.1.5 to 7 and finally to 8. The
end result was the most sluggish and oddly behaving program on my
system. Finally I uninstalled TB and that told me a lot about the
programmers at Mozilla. The uninstall was a joke. It did absolutely
nothing but remove the listing in programs in the control panel, remove
the desktop icon, and remove it from the start menu. Otherwise all of
the Mozilla and Thunderbird folders, files, my email, and registry
entries remained on my system.
I can't recommend this to anyone other than those who really know what
they're doing, but removing all of those folders and registry entries,
rebooting my system, and then doing a fresh install of TB 8 from the
full installer made a huge difference. The improvement in stability and
responsiveness was amazing. Now it works fine, even without the app running.

Hi folks
Thanks to everyone's suggestions. It looks like I'm stuck with
Thunderbird 3.1.1 for now. I uninstalled Thunderbird 8.0, downgraded to
TB 3.1.1 and can now reply to messages. I've
I'm not using any odd keystrokes at all, I initially used the control
shift r keystroke which replies to everyone, but remembered later that
control plus r replies to the sender. When using thunderbird 8.0, I'm
unable to shift tab to the subject field and the to fields of my
message, and when I type, window-eyes says, not a valid key press, or
other messages, as if I was on a web page. It seems to work with tb
3.1.1 however, which stumps me a lot. I appreciate everyone's atempts to
help, but it looks as if I'm stuck with TB 3 for a while. I don't mind
it actually, but it's that thing where you say, it worked yesterday, so
why doesn't it work today? Also with tb 3 as I mentioned, after i type a
few words, window-eyes repeats back what i've typed. If I upgrade to TB
8.0 again, i won't be able to reply to a message like I said before.
Thanks guys.
