Robert, Katherine, etc., How many listservs have you been on that inundated your in box with more messages than you could read in a day, or even a week? This list used to be like that when all replies went, by default, to the entire list. As I recall, the will of the then listers was polled and the change was made. I'll take this any day over the avalanche of email that can otherwise result.
