You said it oh so well!  Part of a function of a list is not only to anwer 
the question of a user but to educate others in the process.
Moreover, when answers are sent privately, some will not bother replying 
especially if discovering the solution may take some effort for there is 
no way to know if the original questioner needs an answer. 

I realize that there are a number of ways of looking at this reply issue.  
While encouraging private replies reduces list traffic, I personally 
believe that those with issues are hurt rather than asisted by this 
approach.  Also, others are hurt by not learning.

I am of the mind that most problems are not unique to any one individual.  
There are others who have the same problem but haven't posed the question 
as it is not important enough for them to do so, they don't know how to 
explain it, don't want to bother, and a myriad of other reasons.
Seeing solutions intended for others helps everyone learn.
