I had this same experience. Did you copy your settings.dat file over? If so,
don't do that as it will indeed break GWConnect. Set everything fresh.

Hello everyone, I have just upgraded to the latest version of GW Connect
which was just released, but there are no sounds for things such as when
someone calls me. I went into the sounds settings in the options dialog,
